Our State Corporations
The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) is the premier government agency for the provision of Standards, Metrology, and Conformity Assessment (SMCA) services since its inception in 1974. Over that period its main activities have grown from the development of standards and quality control for a limited number of locally made products in the 1970s to the provision of more comprehensive Standards development, Metrology, Conformity Assessment, Training, and Certification services. With the re-establishment of the East African Community (EAC) and Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), KEBS activities now include participation in the development and implementation of SMCA activities at the regional level where it participates in the harmonization of standards, measurements and conformity assessment regimes for regional integration. KEBS operates the National Enquiry Point in support of the WTO Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT).
Kenya Accreditation Service (KENAS) is the Sole National Accreditation Body (NAB) mandated to promote accreditation in Kenya. It gives formal attestation that Conformity Assessment Bodies (CABs) are competent to carry out specific conformity assessment activities.
KENAS is a member of the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) and an associate member of the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) which are apex organizations that oversee accreditation activities at a global level. KENAS carries out accreditation based on the following: regional directives; relevant statutes and government regulations; requirements for health, safety, and protection of the environment; and the market and needs of clients.
Rivatex East Africa Limited is a company fully owned by Moi University and was incorporated Rivatex East Africa Limited on 16th August 2007 with the objective of utilizing the facility for training, research, extension, and commercial purposes. It is a vertically integrated textile factory that converts cotton lint through various processes to finished fabrics. It was officially opened on 4th Aug 2007 by the late President Mwai Kibaki as a Moi University facility for Training, Consultancy, Research, Product Development, and Extension

Numerical Machining Complex is an ISO 9001: 2008 Certified engineering firm incorporated under the Companies Act as a limited liability company. NMC was formed for the purposes of manufacturing motor vehicles, vehicle spare parts, and metal-based engineering products. The company offers mechanical and engineering services to the Agricultural, Industrial, and Automotive sectors in the East African market. NMC is equipped with Computer Controlled (CNC) machines, a foundry with a modern dramatic sand-molding machine, heat treatment, and Computer Aided Design.
Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI) is a national research institute established in 1979 under the Ministry of Trade and Industry and mandated to undertake multidisciplinary research and development in industrial and allied technologies. The Research and Technological Innovation (RTI) department handles the institute’s core objectives. The major RTI divisions are Engineering, Energy and Environment, ICT, Leather & Textiles, and Food Technology Divisions.
Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI) is a Government parastatal under the Ministry of Trade and Industry. The Institute was established on 2nd May 2002 upon the coming into force of the Industrial Property Act 2001. Previously the Institute existed as Kenya Industrial Property Office (KIPO), which was established in February 1990 after the enactment of the Industrial Property Act, CAP 509 of the Laws of Kenya.

The Scrap Metal Council (SMC) is a State Corporation domiciled in the State Department for Industry. It was established by the Scrap Metal Council Act, of 2015, with the mandate to develop appropriate measures and mechanisms for regulating the scrap metal industry in ensuring economic growth, protection of public health, and conformity to principles of environmental stewardship as required by the Basel Convention, to institute appropriate measures and mechanisms for protecting the public interest against vandalism, theft of utility infrastructure and private property, to devise methods of attracting investors on the utilization of excess scrap materials and supporting existing users of scrap metal, to determine applicable license fees to be prescribed under this Act; and to receive public complaints and disputes from the public and within the scrap metal industry.
The Anti-Counterfeit Authority was established under the Anti-Counterfeit Act 2008 as a State Corporation with the mandates to enlighten and inform the public on matters relating to counterfeiting, combat counterfeiting, trade and other dealings in counterfeit goods, devise and promote training programs to combat counterfeiting and co-ordinate with national, regional or international organizations involved in combating counterfeiting.
It is a state corporation currently within the Ministry of Industrialization, Trade and Enterprise Development.. Although the Act was passed by Kenya’s Parliament in 2008, it came into force on 1st July 2009 with the principal aim of prohibiting trade in counterfeit goods. The Authority came into operation in June 2010.
