AGOA Forum 2015

The Ministry of Industrialisation and Enterprise Development held an AGOA Forum at the KICC in Nairobi. We believe that a capacity-building Forum on AGOA and regional exports targeted towards micro, small and medium-sized enterprises is highly beneficial in order to take advantage of this great opportunity.

The objective of this forum was to educate MSMEs on the detailed regulations and benefits provided by AGOA and to build the capacity necessary to successfulluy export products to the US under AGOA.

The event brought together representatives from the Kenya and US governments, the private sector, development partners and entrepreneurs from across the 47 counties.

AGOA was recently extended for 10 years, the longest extension the Act has ever received. Beneficiary countries can export over 6000 products to the US under AGOA, duty-free and quota-free. Kenya is the largest exporter in textile and apparel in Africa under AGOA. However, our export portfolio also comprises of leather, vegetables and fruit products.

We believe that with dedicated support for MSMEs, we can greatly increase Kenya's exports to the US, particularly in the leather and agricultural sectors.

Release of World Bank's Ease of Doing Business 2016 Reports

Kenya was ranked 108th in the area of doing business from 129th last year, making it the 3rd most improved country in the world. The report finds that Kenya has implemented at least four regulatory reforms in each indicator aimed at making it easier for local entrepreneurs to do business in the country in 2015/16, a higher percentage than any other country in any other region.

It is the first time Kenya's position has improved since its downward spiral from its 71st position in 2006 following the post-election crisis, a vindication of the quality of reforms instituted by the Kenyan government keen to meet its top 50 ranking ambition by 2020. A high ranking on the ease of doing business index means the regulatory environment is more conducive to start and operate a local firm.
